Curriculum and Instruction

Curriculum and Instruction Goals

Every staff member in the Capac Community Schools family cares deeply about the success of your child(ren).  We work hard to ensure we are providing an environment where your child(ren) can achieve academic success through the implementation of research-based textbooks and materials that will support every learner in reaching their full potential.

Content Standards

“Content standards are used to outline learning expectations for Michigan’s students, and are intended to guide local curriculum development and assessment of student progress.” In the state of Michigan, all k-12 public schools utilize the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. Michigan also has content standards for science, and social studies, as well as electives and other supplementary courses such as world languages. These content standards guide teachers’ daily instruction, the mapping of course content, and expectations for student outcomes.  To view the content standards for each grade level please click the links below.

Instructional Textbooks and Supplementary Resources

All resources and materials utilized by our Capac teachers are based on researched best practices and are aligned with the content standards listed above.  The materials used by teachers are reviewed and analyzed on a five-year cycle through a district-wide committee process.  We are currently going through a robust textbook review process to ensure we have the most current and up-to-date resources available for our students and teachers.

 Elementary ELA

Teachers in grades k-6 use the MAISA ELA units as their primary curriculum resource for tier I instruction. All teachers are also being trained in DRA small group instructional practices to improve their instructional interventional practices for all students, specifically for those students needing additional support. Additionally, teachers in k-2 are trained to use the UFLI phonics program for all students.

Secondary ELA

Teachers in grades 7-12 utilize the Into Literature curriculum program as their primary resource for tier I instruction.

Elementary Math

All k-6 teachers use the Math Expressions curriculum program for tier I math instruction for all students. This year teachers are also working with a math coach from St. Clair RESA to implement the Number Corner program to build students’ math skills and knowledge. This initiative was made possible by a grant from the state of Michigan.

Secondary Math

Teachers in grades 7-12 utilize the Into Math curriculum program as their primary resource for tier I instruction.

Elementary Science

Teachers in grades k-5 use the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum program as their primary instructional resource. Teachers in grade 6 use the Lab Aids curriculum program as their primary instructional resource.

Secondary Science

Teachers in grades 7 & 8 use the Lab Aids curriculum program as their primary instructional resource. We utilize the McGraw Hill textbooks as our primary resource for biology and chemistry courses offered at the secondary level.

Elementary Social Studies

All teachers k-6 use the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum (MC3) as their primary curriculum resource for social studies instruction.

Secondary Social Studies

We utilize the McGraw Hill textbooks as our primary resource for all secondary social studies courses.

Benchmark Assessments

All students in grades k-11 take the NWEA reading and math benchmark assessment three (3) times per school year. Students in grade 12 take the assessments two (2) times per year. The state of Michigan approves the NWEA assessment and measures student growth and achievement.
